There are a good handful of models and stylists I get to call my friends. Occasionally outside of shooting we spend time together but for the most part our relationship has been developed during the time we spend creating photographs. With many of these models we’ve spent so much time together that we’ve formed special friendships. Because of our level of trust it’s easy to ask them to participate in some of my more hair-brained ideas. Calling an agency to find a new model requires so many hoops to jump through that it isn’t worth the effort when trying to shoot a new concept. My latest idea was to hit the open water with a model and my stand up paddle board.
I tapped Jackie to help with this shoot because I know she’s comfortable in the water and has experience on a stand up. She’s also a yoga instructor and I wanted to integrate her yoga into the shoot. I wanted this shoot to be about the beauty of the water coupled with a lifestyle vibe of living in LA.
Lesson learned – swimming 1/2 mile, carrying a giant camera while the model paddles out to the location was a bad idea. By the time I finally got to where I asked her to paddle to I was exhausted. On the return paddle I decided to hop on the board and paddle while she held the camera.
